I haven’t done too many book reviews lately, and I wanted to take a moment to explain why and tell you what I am currently reading.
So as some of you may know, I’m a book reviewer and influencer, which means that publishers and authors offer and send me advanced copies of their new releases so that I can read and promote them to my audience. Some publishers just send me packages of their new releases, and some let me pick which ones I want. I try to strike a good balance so that I don’t get overwhelmed with my responsibilities to read and promote too many books at a time, but lately, I’ve been in a little lull of not “professionally reading” at all–just reading for my own pleasure. Since that has been the case, I wanted to share with you all the books I’ve been enjoying in this “spare time”, so you can find something new to enjoy and discover what I typically read on my own.
First up is an audiobook novelization of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. I found this gem from Audible–where it is exclusively offered so save yourself the time of looking elsewhere–and it’s narrated by my favorite narrator, Richard Armitage. I am almost halfway through this audiobook, and I’ve really enjoyed the slight twists and expansions taken on the original play. I think it fleshes out the story better and makes it easier to picture everything going on. The narrator does a phenomenal job of giving each character his own unique voice. The age-old story still keeps you mesmerized. It’s an all-around win-win.
Secondly is the sixth book in the classic Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Ingleside. I’ve been reading this series throughout my preteen and teenage years and it’s now going into my twenties. I love growing up alongside the character and reliving all the nostalgia from previous books (and of course the movies! not the trash netflix spin-off!). I’m eager to see what adventures Anne gets into this time. It’s a very calming series to read–although Anne gets into multiple scrapes, what I think I’m trying to say is that I just feel at home reading it. As if all is right in the world and tomorrow may well have more sunshine in it than today did.
And lastly is Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. I had on my New Year’s resolutions to read a book of poetry this year (which I have already accomplished, twice over), and this is a classic. It’s also about 600 pages (!!), so time will tell if I actually have the endurance for that. So far I like it and have resonated with some of the poems.
