I have this habit….
Whenever I prepare to take a shower, and put my soap and shampoo and everything in there, I put my washcloth in there too. I turn the water on and let it warm up before I get in. When I pick up my washcloth, I have to squeeze all the cold water out and hold it up to the warm water. No matter how long it stayed in the warm water, it was cold from the initial cold water. The warm water didn’t replace the cold water.
And it hit me one day what a spiritual parallel that is. So often the first thing that hits us in life is coldness. We soak it up until we cannot hold any warmth. And no matter how long we are pelted with warmth, we will never have room for any of it unless we are squeezed. Pressed. Wrung out. It’s those tough and tearing times that the coldness is being squeezed out in order to make room for warmth.
8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.
