Guest Post: The Wizard of Oz

*Today’s guest post is by my friend who shared her “Waves” post with us a couple of weeks ago.*

“I just watched The Wizard of Oz. Those of you who have seen that movie will probably remember the bad witch of the West. So many times she comes against poor Dorothy. However,…(spoiler alert)…the witch does not ultimately succeed. Oh how we need reminders that first of all, our fight is not against those we see around us (Ephesians 6), but against spiritual forces of evil. Each time Dorothy and her friends are attacked by evil, they recognize who is behind the distraction and discouragement. Then they call on help from the only one who can break each evil spell. That is what we each must do: not try to fight on our own but call on the One Who has all power to break chains and set us free. The enemy knows we are doing good for God, and he wants to thwart our plans. Dorothy’s goal is to make it home, and that should be every Christian’s goal. When Dorothy is told to surrender, she stands firm, because surrender will not get her home. Surrendering to the devil does not help any of us build God’s kingdom!

Ephesians 6:10-17

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
