The Armor of God

A friend of mine asked me how to put on the Armor of God, and when I began responding to her, a prayer just flew out of my fingertips onto the keyboard, and when it was finished I saw that it was good and wanted to share it with you all today.

I responded to her, “For me, ‘putting on the Armor of God’ is just praying something like this:

God, cover my head with the helmet of salvation today.  Guard my mind against all evil assignments of the enemy and any thoughts or plans that are not of you.  Help me to only think Your thoughts today.

Cover my front with the breastplate of righteousness.  Let Your righteousness go before me into today and let it protect me from attacks of unrighteousness.  (In specific cases of sickness or stress, although it’s always helpful, I’ll add, ‘May Your breath fill my lungs today and may every breath be full and complete, not triggering a cough or tightness in my chest.  I pray healing over my lungs in Jesus’ name and claim their functioning for Your glory, because every breath I breathe is testimony to Your faithfulness.)

Guard my waist with the belt of truth.  May any anxiety that is resting in my gut be covered by Your truth and peace.  May my core be centered on Your truth today, and may it steady me through whatever comes.

Help me to walk in Your shoes of peace, for how beautiful are the feet of those who bring Your good news to those around them! Help me to walk in Your peace wherever I go today.  May Your footprints be left everywhere I go.

Thank You for the sword of the Spirit, and help me to use it to guard against the attacks of the enemy.  Strengthen me to be a warrior in Your kingdom, wielding Your word effectively, for Your word will never return void.  Thank You that we do not fight against flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities of the dark—and You have already given us the weapons to do so.  You say that no weapon formed against us will prosper! May I take ground for the Kingdom today.

And thank You for the power of prayer! Thank You that I can pray to You about anything, casting my cares on You, for You will not be shaken.  Search my heart, O God, and know my wicked ways, test my anxious thoughts.  Take out everything that does not agree with You and replace it with Your truth today.  I love You, Lord.  Help me to stay alert today to how You speak to me as well as be on guard against attacks.”
